US Visa Interview Documents Checklist: What to Prepare
Organize documents for your U.S. visa interview in Pakistan, India or Bangladesh. Separate student, visitor and family cases, then check official requirements.
Searching for documents required for a U.S. visa interview? Start with your visa category and official appointment instructions. A student in Pakistan, a visitor in India, and a family-based immigrant applicant in Bangladesh should not pack from one universal list.
Use this guide to organize your preparation. It is not a complete or official document checklist.
First, identify the right checklist
Write your visa category at the top of your notes: for example, F1 for study or B1/B2 for a temporary visit. Family-based immigrant cases have a separate process—do not assume the nonimmigrant DS-160 checklist applies to them.
Then open your official appointment instructions. Make three groups: required items, case-specific supporting records, and things to clarify. Do not replace a requirement with advice from social media.
Nonimmigrant interview basics
For student and visitor applications, review the current official instructions covering your passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt where required, and photo requirements. Keep your appointment confirmation easy to find.
The official visitor visa checklist and student visa checklist explain the requirements and exceptions. A photo upload failure, for example, changes what you need to bring.
For the DS-160, see our form and confirmation page guide. Keep the application confirmation separate from the appointment record.
Student documents: connect funding to the course
For F1 preparation, start with your Form I-20 and the official student checklist. Review your academic and funding records so you understand your course, its cost, and how you will pay.
For your own review:
- Separate a scholarship award from an application for a scholarship.
- Distinguish an approved education loan from an estimate or enquiry.
- Check what family support covers and what it does not.
- Label local-currency figures and U.S.-dollar figures clearly.
- Do not treat the same money as two separate funding sources.
These are consistency checks, not rules about a minimum bank balance. There is no single balance figure supplied by this guide. Practice with our F1 interview questions.
Visitor documents: purpose, costs and plans afterward
Review the records relevant to your actual visit. Your preparation should help you explain why you are travelling, how costs will be covered, and what your plans are after the visit.
For a parent visiting family, separate the relative's offer of accommodation from any offer to pay for flights. For a business trip, understand the event or meeting and your role in it.
The Department of State says a visitor invitation letter is not required and does not determine whether a visa is issued. Do not buy a letter or document package believing it guarantees a visa.
Use our visitor interview guide to practice explaining the details.
Work, dependent, exchange and immigrant cases
Use the official checklist for your case before deciding what to bring. To prepare your explanations, choose the relevant guide:
- H1B work interviews: understand your employer and role.
- H4 dependent interviews: review the relationship and principal applicant's details.
- J1 exchange interviews: understand your program and funding.
- Family-based immigrant preparation: review the case-specific relationship and document instructions.
Medical, civil-document, translation and other requirements can differ. A student checklist is not a substitute for immigrant visa instructions.
Local preparation: Pakistan, India and Bangladesh
Pakistan: if a relative or agent organized your file, review it yourself. Check names, dates and funding explanations. Use the Pakistan guide for English and Urdu practice tips.
India: keep education-loan and scholarship records distinct. If you have separate appointment confirmations, check each one's instructions. See the India guide.
Bangladesh: check how names and abbreviations appear across your records, and what the official checklist says about translations. Keep BDT and USD amounts labelled. See the Bangladesh guide.
Do not change original documents to remove a mismatch. Find the reason and follow the appropriate official correction process.
Pack in a way you can use
- Put the required appointment and identity papers where you can reach them.
- Group supporting records by purpose: study, money, work, or family.
- Keep originals and copies clearly separated.
- Note any unresolved question and check it before the appointment.
- Practice explaining a document without reading a long paragraph from it.
A neat folder helps you find things; it does not affect eligibility by itself. Follow your appointment's rules about permitted bags and items.
What a Visa Prepper document check does
Visa Prepper looks for missing or conflicting details; it does not certify documents, submit an application, or guarantee embassy acceptance.
For applicants in Pakistan and India, the free option includes one document check and preparation tips. The $44 one-time package includes ten document checks and six complete AI video interviews. You have 90 days from purchase to use it. Earlier purchases keep their original terms. See the package.
Bangladesh support is coming soon. Everyone can use these free guides.
This is general preparation guidance, not legal advice or an official list of required documents. Your visa category, current government guidance and appointment instructions take priority.
Frequently asked questions
Is the same document checklist right for every visa?
No. Use the official requirements for your visa category and appointment location. Student, visitor, work and immigrant cases can require different documents.
Does Visa Prepper check documents?
Yes. Pakistan applicants get one free document check. The $44 one-time package includes ten checks and six AI interviews, valid for 90 days from purchase. Checks do not certify documents or guarantee acceptance.
Do I need an invitation letter for a visitor visa?
The Department of State says an invitation letter is not required to apply for a visitor visa. Follow the official instructions for your case; an invitation does not guarantee approval.
