US Visa Interview Questions in India: F1, H1B and Visitors

U.S. visa interview preparation for Indian applicants: student funding, education loans, H1B work details, family visits and documents to review.

By Visa Prepper Editorial Team, Visa interview preparation content teamPublished January 30, 2026Updated September 8, 20264 min read

If you are preparing for a U.S. visa interview in India, choose questions for your visa type first. A student explaining an education loan needs different practice from a parent visiting family or an employee travelling for work.

Use the sections below to prepare your own answers. None of these questions or examples is a guaranteed embassy script.

अपने जवाब रटें नहीं। अपनी पढ़ाई, काम और खर्च के बारे में साफ़ बताने की तैयारी करें।

F1 student visa questions: course choice and education loans

Practice explaining:

  1. Why did you choose this university and course?
  2. How does the course connect to your education or work?
  3. What are the tuition and living costs?
  4. How will your loan, family support, or scholarship cover those costs?
  5. What are your plans after studying?

If you have an education loan, read the approval letter yourself. Write down the approved amount, any conditions you need to understand, and what the loan covers. Keep Indian rupees (INR) separate from U.S. dollars (USD) in your notes.

Practice task: divide a page into “loan,” “family contribution,” and “scholarship.” Fill in only sources that apply to you. If part of the funding is not confirmed, do not present it as money already available.

For the wider question list, use our F1 student visa interview guide. The official student visa page explains the application and document requirements.

H1B interview questions: explain the work, not just the title

Try answering these without reading your job description:

  • What does your employer do?
  • What do you do in a normal working day?
  • Where will you work?
  • How does your education or experience relate to this role?
  • If a client is involved, how does that arrangement work?

An applicant working at a client site should keep the employer and client names separate in their explanation. Do not borrow a job description from a friend with a similar title. Review any unclear details with your employer or qualified adviser.

Continue with the H1B interview questions. A spouse or child preparing separately can use the H4 guide.

Visitor questions: parents, family visits and business trips

For a B1/B2 visit, explain the reason for travel, intended length of stay, who will pay, and your plans afterward.

If you are a parent visiting an adult child, practice describing where your child lives, why you are visiting now, and how you will cover the trip. If you are retired, explain your actual circumstances; do not invent a job to fit a sample answer.

For a business visit, name the meeting, event, or purpose in plain words. “I am attending our supplier's product training” is an illustration of a specific explanation, not an answer everyone should use.

Documents and appointments in India

Keep your appointment confirmations and application details together. If your booking includes separate biometrics and interview appointments, check the address, date, and instructions for each one. Do not assume both happen at the same place.

Use the U.S. Mission India visa page to reach the official appointment service. This guide does not provide live slots or wait times, and it does not promise that a particular post handles your case.

Review our document checklist and DS-160 checks. If an agent helped, make sure you understand the final answers yourself.

Practice in simple words

You can first organize your thoughts in Hindi or another language you use comfortably. Then practice saying the same facts clearly. This does not establish which languages are offered at your actual appointment; check official arrangements for your case.

A useful home exercise: ask a friend to choose three questions in a different order each time. After each answer, ask them which detail was unclear. Work on that detail instead of memorizing a longer speech.

Frequently asked questions

How should I explain an education loan in an F1 interview?

Use your actual loan documents. Know the approved amount, what it covers and what other confirmed funding you have. Keep Indian rupees and U.S. dollars clearly labelled.

What should an H1B applicant practice explaining?

Practice explaining your employer, your day-to-day work, the work location and how your background relates to the role. Review your own petition documents rather than memorizing another person's answers.
